About the Instructors

Angie Smith

Angie Smith owns and manages a licensed day care center of 14 years in Marie, Illinois for ages 6 weeks through 12 years. She has been an elementary teacher, a classroom music teacher and teaches Martial arts to children and adults currently in the evenings.

Angie holds a Judan black belt in Bujinkan Taijutsu. Her instructor is Ed Martin (15th dan) of Pennsylvania. She received her Godan from Dr. Hatsumi in Japan, allowing her to be an independent teacher in the Bujinkan in 2003. She has been an active member since 1991.

Angie holds black belts and has trained in other martial arts such as Tae Kwon Do, Kajukimbo, Hapkido, and Tocossa Serrada Eskrima. She was the head of the after school Martial Arts program at Charles Melvin Price Army base in Granite City Illinois for several years. She has also worked in Health Club and Recreational facilities teaching Self Defense. She wrote the Bujinkan Teaching Manual for children (Kid Ninja Manual) with the permission of Soke and Shihan Naguchi after being allowed to film children’s classes in Japan.

Angie has several Shibu schools under her guidance in the Southern Illinois and St. Louis Missouri area. She travels to do seminars and self defense workshops for organizations or martial arts schools. Her other accomplishments and activities include degrees in Elementary and Early Childhood, playing music on piano and fingerstyle guitar, learning to speak Japanese in college, and most importantly spending time with her 10 mo old Grandson.

Anthony Brooks

Has trained in the Bujinkan arts since 1982. He continues his training with regular visits to Japan.

In 2000, Anthony passed his godan test. In 2008, he and his wife Nichole opened the Brooks Martial Arts Center. The Center serves as the current home of the Bushigokoro dojo.

Anthony has been honored to host several very talented Bujinkan artists for seminars at the Center, including Rob Renner, Paul Masse, and Kevin Schneider.

In addition to the Bujinkan arts, Anthony has also trained in Jeet Kune Do, Tai-Chi-Chaun, and Boxing.

Sensei Brooks has his MA in Clinical Psychology and is a Licensed Clinical Psychotherapist with extensive experience working with children and families.

Beth Zimmerman

Beth-Shihan has attained the rank of Judan (10th-degree Black Belt), has traveled to Japan to study with Hatsumi-Soke, Nagato-Shihan, Noguchi-Shihan, Senou-Shihan, Oguri-Shihan, Someya-Shihan and Nagase-Sensei.

Beth is a practicing Trauma Nurse for a major hospital in Michigan.

Bryan Harrison

Spurred on by Bruce Lee and Sho Kosugi ninja movies, started training at the age 11 in Kyokushinkai Karate in West Germany. Went on to study Muay Thai for a short time, and found an instructor in Chinese Gojo Ryu Karate. Earned First Degree Black Belt at the age of 18.

A week before shipping off to Fort Benning to join the Army, Bryan was electrocuted by a downed power line, and as a result, lost half his right arm, both of his feet, and his military career. Spent 8 months in rehab learning to walk again.

After finishing college in America, joined SKH To Shin Do, and trained there for 5 years, earning his Shodan in that art.

Wanting to "get back to the source", joined the Bujinkan in 2005, training under Gabe Logan - Shihan and Kevin Clark - Shidoshi.

At Daikomyosai 2010, passed the Godan Test on the first try. Awarded the Golden Dragon Medal.

Enjoys examining and researching the Shinonki, Ninpiden, and Bansenshukai to further his understanding of early ninja training methods and philosophies.

Charles Gelm

Received Shodan in 1999.

Received Godan in 2007.

Started training in 1994 under Kurt Rittenhouse.

Has been training under Jeff O'Chester and Marty Dunsky for over 10 years.

Derek Arciniaga (kyudan)

Began training in the Bujinkan martial arts in 1999 at the University of Michigan Bujinkan Dojo studying with Shihan Michael Asuncion.

Upon graduation from the university in 2002, he relocated to Inzai-shi, Chiba-ken, Japan to accept a position at the Japanese Ministry of Education (Monbu-kagakushō) in order to study the Bujinkan martial arts under Hatsumi Masaaki Soke.

Since returning to the United States in 2004, he very frequently travels to Japan to continue his personal training with Hatsumi Sensei and Nagase Sensei. Derek Arciniaga is a trusted and dedicated student of Nagase Hiroshi Sensei and Michael Asuncion Sensei.

Ethan Capers (judan)

Began Bujinkan training in 1996. Received Shidoshi Menkyo in 2004 and has trained in the Martial Arts for over 33 years.

He is the co-founder and Dojo-cho of the Bujinkan Mizu Nagare Dojo in Minneapolis, MN.

Gabe Logan

Gabe Logan has trained in the Bujinkan since 1992. His dojo is Bujinkan of the Upper Peninsula Michigan.

James Morganelli

James Morganelli has studied martial arts for more than 30 years, including Eastern and Western styles.

In 1995, he moved to Japan to train under Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi and his Shihan. Returning in 1998, a personal student of Shihan Toshiro Nagato, he founded the Shingitai-Ichi Dojo a year later.

James holds certification in Verbal Defense and Influence from the Verbal Judo Institute and is a staff member at Resolution Group International (RGI), specializing in conflict resolution strategies and training for military, law enforcement, and the private sector, led by Jack E. Hoban.

Kevin Schneider

Kevin Schneider is the chief instructor for the Bujinkan Akahige Dojo. Kevin began his training in the martial arts in 1971. He began his study of Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu in 1981. He first met Bujinkan grand-master Hatsumi Masaaki in September, 1982. From 1984 until 1987, he served as one of the instructors at the Dayton, Ohio dojo of Stephen K. Hayes.

In 1987, he traveled to Japan and was accepted by Hatsumi-sensei as a personal student. At that time, he was also given membership as a licensed instructor in the Bujinkan. Following directions from Hatsumi-sensei, he returned to United States and established the Bujinkan Akahige Dojo. Kevin became a licensed senior instructor in the Bujinkan system in 1991, and he was recently awarded his 14th degree black belt by Hatsumi-sensei.

In addition to his ongoing studies of Budo Taijutsu, he also has studied Tomiki-ryu aikido, Chinese Kung-fu, and Kodokan Judo. He is a manager for a nationwide information systems consulting company and also works as a professional Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician and as an industrial safety educator.

Mike Russell (judan)

Started training in the Bujinkan in 1998 in Lexington KY.

Passed Godan test in 2006

Relocated to Madison in 2008 and opened the Bujinkan Madison Dojo.

Makes regular trips to Japan to study with Soke and the Shihan.

Nate Metz (judan)

Attained the rank of Judan, has traveled to Japan to study with Hatsumi-Soke, Nagato-Shihan, Noguchi-Shihan, Senou-Shihan, Oguri-Shihan, and Someya-Shihan.

He has attended numerous seminars instructed by top Shihan throughout the United States including Dick Severance-Shihan and Michael Asuncion-Shihan.

Nate-Shihan is the co-founder and Chief Instructor of Zentai Martial Arts, has been a soldier in the U S Army for 11-years currently serving in Alpha Company 1/148th Infantry Regiment. He has served in Iraq and Kuwait and has a rewarding career as an EMT.

Pam Dunsky

Co-owner of the the Dayton Bujinkan Dojo. Began training in 1995 when the entire family signed up to learn martial arts. I am fortunate to have traveled to Japan regularly over the past 10 years to study with Soke and the Shihan.

My full time career is senior management with a global financial services firm.

I am lucky to train with my family and friends in an art that I love for the many great teachers, the rich history and for the personal challenges the training helps me navigate through all areas of my life. It brings greater meaning and enjoyment with each year.

Pat Lee (kyudan)

Started his Bujinkan training in 1992 at the Missouri Bujinkan Dojo under Shidoshi Ken Harding. In 1995 he attained Shodan and made his first Bujinkan training trip to Japan. After Hatsumi sensei retired from his international travels in 2005, Pat journeys to Japan to train with Hatsumi Soke and several Shihan.

He operated the Missouri Bujinkan Dojo – Columbia Shibu in 1996 – 1998 and moved to St. Louis, MO to train at the main dojo thereafter.

In 2006 he became a Shidoshi and established the Bujinkan Kajo Waraku Dojo in Valley Park, MO.

  • Tohzanryu (Japanese traditional dance) with Tohzanryu Yume Yuen Sensei.

Rob Hartung

Rob began training in the Bujinkan in 1993. He passed the godan test and received his shidoshi license in 2005. He moved to Japan in 2006 shortly there after became a student of Noguchi sensei.

Rob recently returned from Japan after four years of living and training there in the fall of 2010.

Yost Fulton

Yost Fulton started his training in Budo Taijutsu in the early 80's, and moved to Japan as an exchange student to learn Japanese & train with Hatsumi soke in 1989. After graduating college, he moved back to Japan for work. He lived there for over 6 years, training primarily with Hatsumi soke & Nagato sensei.

Living in Japan & being fluent in Japanese have given Yost many unique opportunities & insights into his Bujinkan training. In addition to regular training with the Detroit Bujinkan Dojo and seminars, Yost travels to Japan frequently and continues training with Hatsumi soke, Nagato sensei, & other shihan.
